1792: A Carthusian monk gave a young married couple named Muelhens a valuable wedding present: a formula for producing an aqua mirabilis for both internal and external use. Recognising the value of this formula, Wilhelm Muelhens produced “Kölnisch Wasser“(“Cologne Water“) in a small manufactory on the Glockengasse a street in Cologne.
1794: During the French occupation, General Daurier decreed that all buildings are to be given consecutive numbers. Muelhens received the number 4711, which is later to become the name of this “Kölnisch Wasser“.
1810: Napoleon Bonaparte issued a decree that all “secret formulas“ for internal use are to be made public. In order to avoid disclosing the formula for his 4711 “Kölnisch Wasser“, Muelhens positioned his 4711 “Echt Kölnisch Wasser“ as a fragrance for external application.
4711 “Echt Kölnisch Wasser“ is translated by French soldiers as “Eau de Cologne“. This name subsequently established itself as the term for all products of this type, which met the growing demand of the upper classes for light, refreshing waters which can be used for personal cleansing or as a fragrance.
1875: 4711 was registered as a trademark and became a fragrance of trust, tradition, naturalness, quality and authenticity.
